Marketplace Weekend launches this week!

Marketplace Weekend with host Lizzie O’Leary is built for the weekend audience. It will be an informative, fun, interactive program that leverages Marketplace’s talent and reporting strength across all platforms.  O’Leary will guide listeners through the most fascinating economic stories of the week – exploring  what happened, why it matters, who it affects and what happens next – through lively and engaging conversations on air and online.

Why arLizzie O'Learye we doing this? The Marketplace Weekend brand provides an opportunity to broaden our reporting scope on the weekend and allows us to react to the dollars-and-sense of what’s going on in the world with greater flexibility. We’ll still cover important personal finance issues, and we’ll make sure to deliver that coverage to you during the week as well across the Marketplace portfolio. Marketplace Weekend will make sense of the economic news of the week as well as prepare listeners for what’s to come in the week ahead. Online, the Marketplace Weekend team will engage listeners throughout the week and bring some of the more intriguing and trending conversations to the weekend hour.

Here is a preview of some of the segments you’ll hear on Marketplace Weekend:

  • This Week/Next Week

A signature segment in each show, we’ll leave listeners and users with a question or thought to react to about something that’s happening in the world of money and the economy. Throughout the week, we’ll interact and have that discussion in the digital space, and then re-visit that conversation with a relevant talker. We take cues from our listener/user interactions, and have a digitally driven newsy q with that talker (could be expert, newsmaker relevant person).

  • The Weekend Number

The Weekend Number segment carries on PM’s most-known franchise, but with our own spin. Instead of being a “market up/market down”, it’s a single-number based look at one of the threads we’re pulling that week. Info that listeners can relate to, react to and find use in. Then Lizzie gets out of the studio and into the field. She takes “The Weekend Number” of the week and gives it a human face. She meets the people behind the news. The takeaway: listeners will know “how this works and what this means”.

  • Tech IRL (In Real Life)

Lizzie and Marketplace Tech host Ben Johnson explore the overlap of the digital world and the “real world”, and pull at the tensions between our online and offline selves. Listeners get deeper insight into how technology is changing everything. We peek into the future, giving hints about what may be to come.
