Alert – Language Advisory: BBC (APM) World Service, Program “Trending” 03:30 ET/18:30 ET Sunday, January 18

This weekend (Sunday, January 18) in BBC’s “Trending” there is an interview with a man who lost his job after being exposed on a Tumblr blog for racist comments. In the programme the ‘N’ and ‘S’ words are used (see details below).

The ‘S’ word is bleeped, but the ‘N’ word is included in context. Following is a transcript of the interview:

TIME IN (10:55)

Presenter CUE “be aware, because there’s language in the interview that I’m about to play to you that you may find offensive”

Chris Rincon: “It had nothing to do with race at the initial blow. IT was people I don’t know sending me messages saying you don’t like him because he’s black and you’re Mexican”.

Mukul (Presenter): “Ok, you say that you were not being racist. In the Facebook string just underneath this post somebody pointed out that this was a fake news thing about Malia Obama and you said – “Hey I know that’s a joking post, we just like talking BLEEP about the n*****” (11:25)

Chris Rincon: “Yeah, because the guy who actually posted that, he had actually made some racial comments in a message towards me, so I said the word. I’m not going to sit here and deny I did use the word. But at the same time people are always going to turn something into what it’s not.”

Mukul (Presenter): “Chris to be clear if you use the N word (11:46) in public it’s pretty clear you hold racist views, is that fair?”

Chris Rincon: “To some extent yes, to some extent no…” (11:54)

(And the interview continues.)
