With Mexico going through its biggest political crisis in two decades, we hear from some of the most influential people on Mexican social media in an extended edition of BBC Trending, recorded in front of a live audience in Mexico City.

The Zapatista movement in the 1990s pioneered the use of the internet, and today protest is often expressed via social media. Over recent months we’ve seen the widespread dissent of the young urban generation against the President of Mexico – reminiscent of the Arab Spring – producing some of the world’s biggest hashtags, and rallying behind causes such as the missing students of Ayotzinapa, the six-months anniversary of whose disappearance falls this week.

Social media is also used for survival, in areas controlled by the drug cartels. As the mainstream media exit, it has become the only form of communication. But people have been killed for tweeting.

Will Mexico’s new online voice be powerful and cohesive enough to bring about lasting change in country?

Presented by Mukul Devichand

This program is part of A Richer World season.

A slightly updated version will be broadcast from Thursday onwards and the audio will be refreshed on the Partners Website for download.

Edward Stourton looks back at the remarkable life of Lee Kuan Yew, who transformed Singapore into one of the world’s richest nations.

He talks to critics and admirers as he assesses the record of the man who laid down the blueprint for how his island nation modernised to compete on the world stage. Often accused of authoritarianism, Lee spoke of governing through “Asian values” to create a successful and harmonious society under firm but benevolent leadership.
