Nuala McGovern named presenter of Outside Source on BBC World Service

Nuala McGovern has been named as the full-time presenter of Outside Source on BBC World Service – the innovative radio news programme which aims to open up the news process for a global audience. Nuala joins Outside Source from Newsday also on the BBC World Service which she has been presenting since its launch in July 2012. She will take up her new position from Monday 7th September.

Outside Source aims to link the BBC correspondents with our listeners and Nuala understands just how to do that,” said Steve Titherington, Senior Commissioning Editor for News at the BBC World Service.

Outside Source broadcasts each weekday from the middle of the BBC newsroom in London.  It uses the BBC’s global network of journalists, its worldwide audience and social media to reflect the current top stories and talking points around the world. As well as the news, it also offers insights into how the news is made and how decisions are taken about the coverage.

Born in Ireland, Nuala joined the BBC in 2009, first presenting and producing World Have Your Say on BBC World Service before moving to Newsday.  Nuala was recently shortlisted at the One World Media Awards for the sustained coverage of irregular migration from North Africa to Europe. She has presented live on location for the BBC for several major global stories, including the Hong Kong protests, #bringbackourgirls in Nigeria, Guantanamo, Kharkiv, Malta, Melilla and the South African elections.   The BBC also produces Outside Source for television presented by Ros Atkins and broadcast on BBC World News and BBC News, for which Nuala is also a regular cover presenter.  She also presents other television news programmes on BBC World News.

Prior to joining the BBC, Nuala worked for New York’s flagship public radio station, WNYC, serving as an Executive Producer for The Brian Lehrer Show which won a George Foster Peabody award for excellence in broadcasting. Nuala has covered and managed major international events for New York Public Radio including their presidential election coverage in 2004 and 2008.
