Marketplace

Week of June 1

Marketplace (PM)

  • Kai talks with Laurie Stewart, President/CEO of Sound Community Bank in Seattle, WA about the forgiveness portion of the Paycheck Protection Program.
  • In early March, Marketplace’s Marielle Segara visited the distribution center for ThredUp, one of the biggest resale platforms. It accepts items from peoples’ closets and resells them online, sharing part of the profit with the original owner. The company receives more than 100,000 items a day and uses an elaborate tracking and warehouse system to decide which items to accept, price, them, and get them out the door. Just a week later, as the virus lockdowns hit the U.S., everything changed. We join her on that visit and talk about what’s different now — and how resale is continuing to do well at a time when overall clothing sales have dropped dramatically.

Marketplace Morning Report

  • June 4: In this week’s edition of A History of Now on Marketplace Morning Report, the team will focus on housing – examining how we developed housing protections following the Great Depression and how those policies might impact how we emerge out of COVID-19. We look at how VC’s bought up a lot of rental housing and how corporate landlords have impacted renter’s rights.

Marketplace Tech

  • June 1: While some tech companies are laying off thousands, other firms are on the hunt to scoop up that talent. How has the pandemic affected the market for software engineers?
  • June 2: Our China correspondent, Jennifer Pak, recently took a few sightseeing trips and learned first-hand how closely people in China’s movements and health are being tracked. Could those privacy intrusions be a sneak peek at what might happen here
  • June 3: Synack is a startup that provides a marketplace for white hat hackers—the good guys—to probe companies’ security systems. The company says it’s seen a huge uptick in the number of hours its hackers are working during the pandemic.
