Marketplace

Week of August 10

Marketplace (PM)

  • Kai checks back in with Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America.
  • Kai talks with Rita Colwell, former director of the National Science Foundation about her new book A Lab of One’s Own and the persistent problems that have kept many women from rising to the top of the profession.
  • One of the consequences of structural racism in our economy is the persistent gap between Black and white homeownership. Just 42-percent of Black households own their homes compared to 72 of white households, and yet in majority-Black communities like Baltimore there are thousands of houses just sitting empty. Marketplace’s Amy Scott has been reporting on the ongoing vacancy crisis in Baltimore where there are more than 16,000 buildings on the city’s official vacancy list. Although that number has been approximately the same for a decade, even after millions of dollars in investment, there has been progress in some neighborhoods. For the past several months, Amy has been following the evolution of a single block in West Baltimore.

Marketplace Tech

  • August 10: Inclusive design – Nicolas Steenhout advises companies on web accessibility, inclusion and disability. How should websites—and even our own social media posts—be designed?
  • August 11: Haben Girma is a disability rights lawyer and recently wrote a book about her experiences – Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard. How did tech help her on her journey, what tech is she most excited about?
  • August 12 (tentative): Are there any tech solutions to the additional needs students with disabilities will have learning remotely this fall? What do Zoom / Google Classroom, etc. not provide?
