State of the Union Offerings

Marketplace offers interactive widget

On January 28, President Obama will deliver his 2014 State of the Union. As part of our coverage that night, Marketplace will offer a way to bring listeners to your station website — with an embeddable, all-in-one State of the Union widget available to all APM stations.

The President will tackle many economic issues, including the debt ceiling, the minimum wage and long-term unemployment benefits. The widget will bring his words to life, with a live video stream, live tweeting and blogging from Kai Ryssdal and the Marketplace team, plus audience engagement. Widget viewers can ask questions and add commentary.

The widget will be available from the On-Line Gallery of APM Stations this week.

BBC’s The Newsroom extended for State of the Union

The BBC World Service will offer an extended edition of The Newsroom on Tuesday, January 28th during the 2100 EST hour to bring your listeners the annual State of the Union Address by President Barack Obama. This extended program is only available to air live.

Please note: This program does not follow the regular World Service Clock. At this time, the BBC will maintain the top of the hour billboard and newscasts in the 2100 EST. Stations will be alerted via Content Depot in the event that changes. The bottom of the hour funders, cutaway, billboard and newscast will not be available from 29:30-32:30.

Black History Month Programming

Black History month begins in less than two weeks. Bring your listeners these acclaimed documentaries and special programs:

American RadioWorks

This series of seven documentaries chronicles America’s racial past and the long, dramatic struggle for civil rights. The seven documentaries are available to download from PRX .

On Being with Krista Tippett

John Lewis is a United States Congressman and he was a core leader – one of the “big six” – of the civil rights movement. Krista Tippett sat down with him in Montgomery, Alabama in the midst of a Congressional civil rights pilgrimage led by Lewis and attended by 30 members of the House and Senate from both parties. Their conversation is a journey into history – into the civil rights leaders’ spiritual confrontation within themselves – and into the intricate art and work of successful nonviolence.

The program is 58:00 minutes in length. Stations interested in carrying the program should contact Lily Percy

BBC Witness: Black History Month

A special hour-long edition of Witness from the BBC World Service, bringing together some of our favorite interviews looking at the African-American experience as told by people who were there. This program will be available to download from the American Public Media Content Depot Exchange under BBC Documentaries and Specials. Stations will be alerted via email once this program is loaded and available.

Performance Today

Performance Today continues to be one of the best classical music programs in production today. As we look to the future and anticipate the needs of an ever-increasing global genre, we’re happy to announce the hiring of two new PT staff members.

New staff writer: David Malley has held editorial positions at various media outlets including the Discovery Channel and Rolling Stone, and his writing has appeared in numerous magazines and journals. From 2006 – 2009, he lived in Berlin, Germany where he performed with Michael Laub’s Remote Control Productions, and played an American soldier on German television. His novel-in-progress, American Spectacular, merited a recent Minnesota State Arts Board grant and an artist’s fellowship at the Anderson Center at Tower View.

New production assistant: Avital Rabinowitz will be wrangling the hundreds of details that you and our artistic partners rely on each week. She is a graduate of Columbia University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Leadership at the University of Minnesota.  And, like many of her peers, she’s had her fair share of internships including those at the Metropolitan Opera (NY), the Minnesota Opera, as well as a few at Minnesota Public Radio/American Public Media including one with Performance Today.

Wits

Wits just performed its first road shows, at Largo in Los Angeles. The three performances each sold out and featured an amazing collection of stars including Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Anna Kendrick, Keegan Michael Key, Ellie Kemper, Aimee Mann, Paul F. Tompkins, Patton Oswalt, Ted Leo and more. Your listeners can hear those shows later in January alongside many other fresh episodes of Wits taping this winter and spring.

Award Nominations for The Splendid Table and Dinner Party Download

Both The Splendid Table and The Dinner Party Download have been nominated for Stitcher Awards. This is the second time for both and the DPD have been invited to perform at the awards presentation.

Splendid Table received a lovely shout out in Saveur Magazine’s top 100 issue. Here are some highlights:

“Whether it’s a chef extolling the beauty of cooking with lard, a botanist discussing the history of ginger, or an inexperienced home cook wondering what to do with disparate ingredients in her pantry, the affable Lynne Rossetto Kasper has a way of making everyone she interviews seem like the most delightful person on earth. And we love her for it. We look forward to many more years of listening to Rossetto Kasper, knowing we’ll find inspiration in every episode.”

Important! Please report your 2012 NFFS Capital Revenue by January 31, 2014!

APM has begun processing station fees and rates for FY15 (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015). A key first step is to verify that we have correct Total Station Revenue or TSR (FY2014 CSG + FY2012 NFFS, as reported to the CPB) for each station. This revenue is used to calculate each station’s annual APM service fee and Marketplace fee, if applicable.

Every year we contact all of you to ascertain whether any CAPITAL REVENUE is included in that year’s TSR. “Capital Revenue” is defined as revenue earned from capital campaigns and/or endowments as they appear in your CPB AFR report, specifically, lines 17 & 18 of Schedule A.

To correctly adjust your TSR, all stations needing to back out Capital Revenue must notify APM no later than Friday, January 31, 2014. All responses should be directed to Andrew Cleveland along with the first three pages of the AFR report that includes the Capital Revenue.

If we do not have this information by 1/31/2014 we will not be able to adjust TSR and it will impact your program fees.

If you have already sent us your capital and/or endowment revenue information, thank you. If you have any questions, please contact your Station Relations Representative ASAP.
