Marketplace

Week of June 22

Marketplace (PM)

  • Kai talks to Jia Lynn Yang, author of One Mighty and Irresistible Tide: The Epic Struggle Over American Immigration, 1924-1965.
  • Kai talks to Pamela Newkirk, NYU journalism professor and author of Diversity, Inc. about workplace diversity.
  • In early March, Marketplace’s Marielle Segarra visited the distribution center for ThredUp, one of the biggest resale platforms. It accepts items from peoples’ closets and resells them online, sharing part of the profit with the original owner. The company receives more than 100,000 items a day and uses an elaborate tracking and warehouse system to decide which items to accept, price, them, and get them out the door. Just a week later, as the virus lockdowns hit the U.S., everything changed. We join her on that visit and talk about what’s different now — and how resale is continuing to do well at a time when overall clothing sales have dropped dramatically.

Marketplace Tech

  • June 22: This week we’re reporting on how people are dealing with their internet service in recent months, including those who can’t afford it or who live in areas where it’s unavailable.
  • June 23: The FCC is about to spend $16 billion to increase broadband availability, but is relying on faulty maps. We’ll talk about broadband speeds, access and how little we really know about coverage.
  • June 24: Even if you can get broadband, the costs can vary widely. We’ll talk about how that divide got to be that way and whether it bears any relation to the cost of delivering the product.
  • June 25: Given the lack of competition in many markets for internet services, what’s the state of play on new entrants that could offer better service/lower prices? Is COVID speeding up or slowing down this process?
