Marketplace

Week of July 20

Marketplace (PM)

  • Kai talks with Prof. Robert E. Weems about the history of Black-owned insurance agencies and the ramifications of their decline.
  • Even at restaurants that have managed to stay open for curbside pickup and takeout, or reopen with reduced capacity, tips are way down – 75%, according to the nonprofit One Fair Wage. To make up some of that shortfall, a lot of restaurants have raised wages for their servers and other tipped workers. Marketplace’s Sam Fields looks into how that’s playing out for workers and restaurant owners.

Marketplace Tech

  • July 20: Companies have increasingly turned to cloud computing services during the pandemic to help them manage the surge in demand for online shopping and remote work tools like Zoom. How has that pushed the industry to innovate?
  • July 22: Get out the vote groups are turning to an old school method of boosting voting turnout under COVID-19 restrictions. New research shows using “turnout captains” (Chicago political machine-style) really does work in the digital age. What does that look like, and will campaigns join in?
