Marketplace

Week of August 24

Marketplace (PM)

  • Kai talks with Sarah Frey about her new book The Growing Season and fall pumpkins.
  • Kai talks with Bill Bynum, the CEO of Hope Credit Union, about banking access and Black-owned businesses.
  • Marketplace’s Justin Ho looks into the truck — and lately, the empty truck — as an economic indicator: When demand for products slows down, freight brokers are among the first businesses that can provide a glimpse into what’s happening. Lately, signs are indicating that many smaller trucking companies are getting a little desperate to fill up their semis. How do freight brokers normally make money? How do freight brokers survive when an economy starts shutting down? What does it mean when a trucking company starts cold-calling businesses and asking if they need anything shipped?

Marketplace Tech

  • August 24: Apple and Epic are in a feud over the game Fortnite.  Apple has blocked it from being sold in the app store after Epic enabled users to buy in-app purchases in a method that keeps Apple from charging its 30% fee, a clear violation of the Apple store rules. Guest: Nicole Carpenter, who works for the gaming news site Polygon.
  • August 25: Lyft is planning to stop service in California.  What does this mean for the many independent contractors who drive for the platform – how are they thinking about their futures? Guest: Harry Campbell – drives for both Lyft and Uber, and also blogs about it at TheRideShareGuy.
  • August 26: The future of virtual events – was the first virtual convention considered a success? How much did the DNC spend on it, and is this a potential model for how to do a virtual event in the future? Guest: Maggie Reardon, reporter for CNET.

Classical

Performance Today

August 26: Performance Today will celebrate Women’s Equality Day with music by historic and living female composers including Margi Griebling-Haigh, Clarice Assad, Mel Bonis and Andrea Clearfield.
