Marketplace

Marketplace PM

Week of July 12

  • Kai talks to Barney Santos, founder of BLVDMRKT in Montebello, CA, a market designed out of old shipping containers.
  • July 13: We’ll get the latest read on inflation when the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts out its Consumer Price Index for the month of June. As you may recall, the May report showed the biggest annual increase in consumer prices (four-point-nine percent) in 13 years. If you’re in the housing market, you may also have noticed that home prices have been spending a lot of time in record-breaking territory; and given that housing inflation is measured as part of the CPI, you might expect that number would be heading toward higher ground, too. But whether we’re in a housing boom or a housing crisis or neither, housing inflation – as measured by the CPI – doesn’t seem to notice: it’s been hovering around two-and-a-half percent for the past couple decades. Marketplace’s Amy Scott went looking for an explanation of why housing inflation calculations seem to have lost touch with reality.

Marketplace Tech

  • Throughout the summer, Marketplace Tech will have a rotating schedule of hosts during the summer months. Kimberly Adams will host July 12, 15-16, and Molly Wood will host July 13-14.
  • July 12: The neighborhood social media platform Nextdoor is planning to go public. It’s valued around $4-point-3 billion dollars. Its revenue comes from advertising, and the company says it saw astronomical growth this past year. At the same time, it’s had problems with both hate speech as well as the spread of misinformation. This made us wonder: how does Nextdoor keep from making the same mistakes Facebook did? Is there a way to sell ads but not rely on controversial content? Guest: Susan McGregor, a scholar with the Data Science Institute at Columbia.
  • July 13: EU Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager is Europe’s top antitrust regulator—akin to the FTC’s Lina Khan. There’s a lot on her plate: investigations into all of the big US tech companies being top of the list. She’ll talk about how we’re at a turning point when it comes to tech regulation and what is shaping her approach.

The Daily

July 9: Day X – What inspired Franco A, the German military officer accused of terrorism charges? On this episode of Day X, Katrin Bennhold digs into Franco’s personal history and reports on what set him on his far-right course.

On Point

  • Boston Globe columnist and MSNBC contributor Kimberley Atkins Stohr hosts On Point from July 12-16.
  • July 12: Since 1964, a Supreme Court ruling known as New York Times Co. v. Sullivan has protected the press and the public’s right to criticize public officials in the conduct of their duties. But now Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch has joined Clarence Thomas in calling for that landmark ruling to be re-examined. We explore how the ruling came about, why it has been so important, and the arguments for re-visiting it in this social media era.
  • July 13: After more than a year of trying to sustain work in a pandemic, at a time we’re seeing record numbers of workers quitting their jobs, is it time for a fundamental change in the role of work in our lives?  To consider this question, we’ll look to Iceland, where more than 2,500 workers, or more than 1% of Iceland’s workforce, participated in a 4-day work-week study and found no decrease in productivity. On day two of our 5-day work week, The Boston Globe’s Kimberly Atkins Stohr explores the 4-day work week.

  • Paul Simon took a trip all over the world, which included stops in South Africa and Graceland. Things were hoppin’ in Minneapolis with Prince writing a big hit for The Bangles, while his protegee’s Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced Janet Jackson’s biggest album yet. The catch phrase of the year may have been “Word Up!” thanks to Cameo’s funky hit single, Rap and Rock met in the middle on Run DMC & Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” there were debut albums from Beastie Boys & Bruce Hornsby and the Range, and in the alternative world both REM and New Order released their 4th albums.
  • Outside the world of music, the space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after takeoff, killing all 7 aboard.
