A Note from Steve Titherington, BBC

The BBC is currently reacclimating itself to office working – slowly! And Covid remains a massive global story, but the UK hosting COP26 has reminded everyone of the multiplying and complex issues of our age. Add to that tensions in the South China Seas, the Horn of Africa and the World Service remains as busy as anytime I have known since I joined decades ago!

And I’m glad to say the World Service has been broadcasting as efficiently and comprehensively and humanely through the pandemic. The need for radio and the chance to listen to a fellow human’s voice and share each other’s story of both success and pain remains as strong as ever. This, in some ways, this makes this a good time for me to be stepping down as Sr Head of Content and looking forward to doing more exciting things in the BBC and beyond.  (And some unexciting things for once!)

Working closely with you all has been a highlight of my work here.  I’ve learnt masses about storytelling, working with audiences to build real connections and to bring purposeful journalism to millions of Americans. I always wanted Newshour and BBC journalism to be a part of your schedules not an addition: To be an essential element of the listeners’ day which helped build your audiences. I think that all of us here at the BBC have listened to your feedback and responded to your advice, and we are better for it.

I have had the privilege of meeting many of you here in London and at many PRPD. I’ve learnt a lot from each conversation there, but what you may have made of some of my presentations I’m not so sure! One audience member advised me solemnly as I stood down the podium: “I enjoyed it Steve, but I have to tell you the guy sitting next to me says he didn’t understand a word of it, but not to worry he did want you to know he loved your English accent.”

So, I am now available for pledge drive recordings!

Thank you . . .  It has been a real pleasure.

In my place will be a new Controller, Jon Zilkha, a new Commissioner, Gwenan Roberts and a new Executive Editor of News Commissioning, Liz Gibbons. I know they will love working with you as much as I have.
