Marketplace

Each Friday in March, Marketplace will feature an episode from a short series on cryptocurrency mining. The series will focus on what crypto mining is, its environmental impacts, and how US cities are handling the influx of mining operations.

  • March 4: What is mining?: “Crypto mining” is an energy-intensive computing process that’s an essential part of many cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin. Marketplace’s Matt Levin explains in simple terms what mining is, why it can be so lucrative, why it tends to require so much energy, and how it can adversely affect the electrical grid and the environment.

Week of February 28: On Point will continue to cover the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • February 28: On Point takes a close look at how Europe is reacting to the invasion and how European nations are being impacted – from their economies, to refugees, to the risks of cyber-attack.

Time Machine from The Current

March 4 – Women of the 1980s

  • This week, we’ll celebrate Women’s History Month with a special Women of the 1980’s show. The decade that brought us iconic artists like Madonna, who made it to headliner status while making the headlines. Sade made her debut Diamond Life and created a quiet storm. Hardworking music vets Bonnie Raitt and Tina Turner turned in the biggest selling albums of their careers. We learned that Cyndi Lauper is so unusual, the synth pop duo Eurythmics emerged. The Bangles and Sheila E both had big hits written by Prince. Whitney Houston became a household name and The Pretenders showed no sophomore slump with their Pretenders II album.
  • Outside the world of music: Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. Sandra Day O’Connor became the first Woman to serve on the US Supreme Court and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher wins a rare third term in Britain.
