Due to discrepancies in Daylight Saving Time between the US and the UK, the BBC World Service will be on a two-week interim schedule from March 13-26. Marketplace

Week of March 7

Marketplace (PM)

Each Friday in March, Marketplace will feature an episode from a short series on cryptocurrency mining. The series will focus on what crypto mining is, its environmental impacts, and how US cities are handling the influx of mining operations. Series promos will be posted to ContentDepot here.

  • March 11: Upstate Moratorium: Electricity is really cheap in northernmost New York State – so cheap that a number of mining operations have relocated there. At first, small towns like Plattsburgh and Massena were happy to have the new investment. Then they started noticing local lakes weren’t freezing over in winter due to the heat generated by mining operations’ generators. Local indigenous people worried that when the mining boom crashed, they’d be left with toxic abandoned computers in their community. As Marketplace’s Lily Jamali reports, the town of Massena — population 12,000 and home to the world’s largest mining operation — has banned any further crypto development in town.

Marketplace Tech

  • Kimberly Adams continues to serve as the interim host of Marketplace Tech.
  • March 7: A short interview with Marketplace’s Matt Levin to summarize his crypto mining feature, which aired on Marketplace PM on Friday, Mar 4.
  • March 8 (tentative): Ukraine was one of Europe’s leading exporters of IT services, and we hear from Marketplace’s Stephanie Hughes on how businesses that have relied on this IT support are adjusting.

On Point

This coming week, On Point will continue to cover the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • March 7: On Point investigates Russia’s military capabilities and its current tactics, and Ukraine’s defense capabilities on the ground, at sea and in the air.

The Daily

On March 3, Sabrina Tavernise was announced as a co-host of The Daily, sharing host responsibilities with Michael Barbaro. Find the full announcement and details on the APM Distribution blog.

Arts and Culture

Time Machine from The Current

March 11 – 1969

  • The Time Machine drops back to 1969 this time.  Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon in the same year ½ a million gathered at Max Yasgurs farm in upstate New York for an event called Woodstock. Crosby, Stills and Nash played their 2nd gig there and also issued their debut album. Creedence Clearwater Revival also played Woodstock and dropped two albums. Led Zeppelin came out of the gate with a vengeance. They dropped their debut and the II album. Janis Joplin left Big Brother and the Holding Company and went solo. The Beatles performed that unannounced concert on the rooftop of their Apple Corps headquarters with keyboardist Billy Preston and also issued their Abbey Road album. The Rolling Stones released one of their finest albums in their long history. Sly and the Family Stone brought some unity to a troubled world with their Stand! effort. Tony Joe White turned us on to his “swamp rock” and The Meters brought the funk! It’s all 1969, our year on this episode of Time Machine from The Current.

February 1, 2022 – March 31, 2022

Length: One hour

Guest host Tayari Jones (New York Times bestselling author, most recently of the novel An American Marriage) helps us to celebrate Morrison, the American master who died in 2019. Morrison’s novels, including Beloved, Jazz and Song of Solomon, have become an indelible part of the American canon. Her fierce, poetic visions earned her the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was also an editor, advocate, teacher, and mother.
