The BBC continues its coverage on the attack on Charlie Hebdo

The BBC continues its coverage on the attack on Charlie Hebdo. Rebecca Kesby is still in Paris and will present live for World Have Your Say at 1300 ET.

France Defiant

With the two main suspects in the Charlie Hebdo attack still on the run, France is in the midst of a passionate debate about how to respond to the murderous assault.

#JeSuisCharlie is vying with #JeSuisAhmed, referring to one of the policemen killed in the attack, prompting comments like this:

“Joel Nicholas Chua emails: #ā€ˇJeSuisAhmed is much, much more profound. Ahmed was the police officer who was killed on the pavement near the magazine’s office. He was Muslim – a Muslim who died trying to protect the staff of a magazine that reveled in insulting his religion. Charlie is no hero. Ahmed was.”

Should there be limits to absolute freedom of speech? Is it time to look for other strategies to integrate France’s large Muslim minority? Is it important to debate the Muslim faith of the attackers, or is that irrelevant? And is it true, as one British columnist said today, that the world’s media has connived in turning Charlie Hebdo into a target but NOT publishing what might offend Muslims?

We’ll debate these and other questions on today’s show.
