Brains On! presents: Smash Boom Best

One hour. Available April 1-June 30, 2019.

As the weather heats up, so will the family-friendly competition! Brains On! podcast host Molly Bloom hosts two lively debates for the ages.

Presented in a game show, “versus” format perfect for young audiences, teams of journalists and comedians will share logical arguments and debate strategies for which is best: Books vs. Movies, Lava vs. Quicksand. It’s a funny, fast-paced hour of engaging radio for the whole family.

Presented by APM’s The Water Main, “Just Eat It: Why food waste matters” will delight and inspire audiences to improve how they see and care for the environment.

Just Eat It: Why food waste matters

One hour. Available April 1-July 8, 2019.

Agriculture accounts for two-thirds of the nation’s fresh water use and half its land use. Despite this massive investment, America wastes 40 percent of its food. The Water Main explores the resources used to grow food – and what we can do to ensure they’re not squandered.

Guests include: Francis Lam, host of The Splendid Table; Joanne Berkenkamp of the Natural Resources Defense Council; Homa Dashtaki, founder of White Moustache yogurt; chefs-in-training at Maryland Food Bank’s FoodWorks program; grocery store dumpster divers; families participating in a food waste challenge; a farmer on the resources behind food production; and a chef armed with ideas for repurposing food scraps.

Hosted by Marketplace reporter and guest host Jed Kim, “Just Eat It” presents an hour of solutions journalism on preventing food waste and serving the needs of the hungry, perfect for Earth Day (April 22) and Stop Food Waste Day (April 24), as well as the summer picnic and party season.

Brains and Losses: The bottom line on aging and financial vulnerability

One hour. Available May 17-27, 2019.

Marketplace Morning Report host David Brancaccio presents immersive storytelling to explore the evidence for what doctors are calling “Age-Related Financial Vulnerability.”

Neuroscientists and gerontologists see evidence that people become more vulnerable to financial exploitation as they age. Con artists, fraudsters, even family, friends, and caregivers take money from seniors and abuse their trust. According to researchers, the shame of these crimes prevents victims from reporting or talking about them.

The Marketplace team presents stories of fraud victims and their families from across the U.S., supported by a wide range of nationally-recognized experts – from the Stanford Center on Longevity, to an elder justice advocate recognized by a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant, to the grandson of the New York philanthropist at the center of the most high-profile case of elder financial fraud this century.

“Brains and Losses” is highly relevant for Mental Health Awareness Month (May) and complements on-air reporting segments on Marketplace Morning Report from May 17-24.
