BBC Airing Two Specials on Women’s Lives this November

Please note the special programs below:

First, “BBC Global Questions: What Does Equality mean for Women in Africa?” will air on November 14-15 on “The Weekend Documentary.”

Global Questions travels to Kenya to examine sexual politics and gender equality for women in Africa. The African Union declared 2015 the ‘Year of Women’s Empowerment’ – and while there have been examples of improved legislation on sexual violence, education and equality, for the majority, progress has been uneven and slow. Twenty years ago, the Beijing Conference on Women set ambitious targets to transform the lives of women across the world, but few women in Africa are in positions of power and influence and patriarchal politics still dominates. Many African women have poor access to land, credit, health care and education. Violence against women has reached alarming proportions and many girls still face the daunting threat of trafficking, female genital cutting, early or forced marriages and unwanted pregnancies.

The programme, chaired by BBC presenter Zeinab Badawi, brings together a panel of five high-profile Africans from the worlds of politics, civil society and the international community, including Supreme Court Judge Lady Justice Njoki Ndungu, Director of the United Nations Population Dr Babatunde Osotimehin,  Co-founder of African Women are Free to Choose (AWA-FC) Fuambai Sia Ahmadu, and Somali opposition politician Junet Mohamed MP. The discussion will give ordinary Africans the chance to question key decision makers about how women can have a bigger role in influencing policy decisions and in shaping the future of their continent.
