Marketplace

Marketplace (PM)

Week of September 12

  • Some 300 housing development projects (as of July 2022) across 113 cities in China have been sat for months, sometimes years, unfinished. In most cases developers are strapped for cash and cannot complete the projects. But they’ve not officially defaulted, so homebuyers cannot get their money refunded. Homeowners are threatening to stop, and in some cases have stopped, paying their mortgages. The threats got the attention of the central government and suddenly their voices and stories were censored on social media to prevent more people from joining. Some governments have pledged to get the projects restarted. But in the weeks following the boycott threats, some homeowners tell us nothing much has changed. Marketplace’s Jennifer Pak reports.

Marketplace Tech

  • Kimberly hosts all week.
  • Sep 12: Kimberly speaks with Meredith Whittaker, incoming President of the encrypted messaging service Signal. Whittaker is a former Google employee who comes at this position as a vocal critic of big tech.
  • Sep 13: Kimberly speaks with Kendra Alberts, technology lawyer and lecturer at Harvard’s Cyberlaw Center, to discuss why code is speech and protected by the 1st Amendment.

On Point

  • Sep 12: This year Congress came up with a solution to help the U.S. Postal Service. A bipartisan bill passed that’s the biggest financial reform of the post office in 20 years. On Point examines what the Postal Service Reform Act fixes and if it offers the underlying structural reforms needed to get the USPS out of its financial hole.
  • Sep 13: Leading into the midterms TV political ads flood the airwaves. But do they actually work to change minds? To get voters to the polls? On Point explores the thinking behind the ads that campaigns and political parties spend millions on and if they’re worth it.

Rulebreakers: Lauri Love: Living with my Autism

Lauri Love

  • Description: Alleged British computer hacker Lauri Love was arrested in 2013 on suspicion of stealing data from the FBI, Nasa and other US agencies. In 2018, he won his appeal against extradition to the US. The judge cited Lauri’s depression and autism as factors in the decision, saying extradition would be “oppressive by reason of his physical and mental condition”. Two years on, Lauri describes his daily life and explains how a nice comment from someone can turn into a painful assault for him. This is part of the Rulebreakers series from BBC World Service in collaboration with Sundance Institute. *This description text has been updated* Image: Illustration of Lauri Love.
