Houston has been recognized nationally for its efforts to move some 30,000 people living on the streets into permanent housing. One key aspect of their housing first approach is the availability of cheap apartments and landlords willing to rent to people using housing vouchers. But Houston – one of the most affordable cities in the country for housing – is turning a corner. Rents have gone up 20% since the pandemic and much of the affordable apartment stock in the city is being used up – all the while, developers are favoring high-end constructions over other developments. Reporter Elizabeth Trovall explores how Houston, touted for its homelessness program and affordability, is confronting the increasing costs of housing and construction.

Marketplace Tech

Jan 8 – 11: Lily Jamali reports from this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. More than 100-thousand people from around the world are expected to attend CES this week. After two years of decline, consumer electronics are due for a comeback in 2024. From electric cars, to flying cars, to AI, to gaming, there’s a lot of ground to cover — two million square feet of convention space, in fact. But who’s counting? Marketplace’s team on the ground will take you there.

On Point

  • Monday, Jan 8: Many of us learned how to do our jobs and connect with colleagues at our first workplace. But after the pandemic normalized remote work, how are young people today getting that professional coming-of-age experience?
  • Tuesday, Jan 9: Can anyone beat Trump in the Republican primaries? Less than a week before the Iowa caucus, Republican strategist Whit Ayers breaks down the race and what it says about the state of American politics.
  • Wednesday, Jan 10: History tells us that how humans have treated each other over the past 75 years has been an anomaly. That’s the conclusion of Simon Sebag Montefiore’s narrative history of the past nearly one thousand years. He explains what he’s observed about human behavior since 1945, why he thinks we’re about to see more normalcy return and why that might not be a good thing.
