Marketplace (PM)

  • Ocean shipping costs have doubled, even tripled this year. The reason is a perfect storm of disruptions around the world and feared disruptions closer to home. Marketplace’s Sabri Ben Achour delves into the diverse drivers straining the global network of ocean trade.
  • In May, NVIDIA purchased its 8-building, futuristic HQ in Santa Clara for $374 million– 6 parcels of land, 8 buildings, 2 parking structures and 2 million SQ of future development rights. It’s a massive footprint, but it’s just one of the ways NVIDIA is increasingly looming over the Bay Area—it’s already been based and expanding on this site since 1998. Marketplace’s Meghan McCarty Carino looks at the local effects of NVIDIA, now a massive landowner, and its seemingly unstoppable growth.

  • Monday, July 22: It’s Day 1 of On Point’s Week of Wonder. Today, the Great Salt Lake is central to environmental and economic life in Utah. It holds great religious significance too. But it’s rapidly drying up. What would it take to save the Great Salt Lake?
  • Tuesday, July 23: Day 2 in On Point’s Week of Wonder. In places where human beings have done everything they can to pave and plow over nature, what might happen if we just left those places alone? Meghna speaks with the owner of a country estate in England who takes us inside the “rewilding” movement.
  • Wednesday, July 24: On Point’s Week of Wonder continues with the mystery of UFOs, or as the government calls them now – UAPs – Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon. We hear about 75 years of UFO history, government secrecy, and government mistrust.
  • Thursday, July 25: On Point’s Week of Wonder embraces uncertainty. No matter how much order, sense, or predictability we try to bring to our lives, uncertainty and the anxiety it can create are always there. Researchers say, that’s actually a good thing. We find out how we can learn to love uncertainty.
  • Friday, July 26: On Point’s Week of Wonder wraps up with celebrated author Amy Tan. She doesn’t just write best-selling novels, she’s a passionate birder, too. Her book, ‘The Backyard Bird Chronicles’, describes the wonder she sees looking right outside her own windows.
