A note from Deb Clark on Marketplace Money

Hi all,

As we head into the dog days of summer, Money is putting the personal into personal finance, devoting four full hours to answering questions about money. Over the next month, the show will tackle one of the major themes of personal finance each week – investing, saving, banking, credit – with input from listeners online and on-air. It’s a series of shows dedicated to solving the money mysteries that exist in daily life.

Here’s a sneak peek:

Weekend of 7/12, OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH MONEY: Our show on investing will look at investing at all ages. It’s not a one-size fit model. Invest, let’s say, 10 percent of your income each year. So what should you keep in mind as you age? What are some models for investing depending on your income bracket and lifestyle?

Weekend of 7/19, SAVING: Perhaps this seems simple — save for retirement, save for a rainy day. But what approach should you take with an interest rate close to zero? How do you change your savings behavior?

Weekends of 7/26 & 8/2, INVESTING AND CREDIT, These programs look into the future — what are some of the questions you should ask before your merge finances with a partner? Should you pay off your debt or start an emergency fund first?

In the meantime, we have some terrific guests hosts coming up. Here’s how things look for the weeks ahead:

Adriene Hill, our Senior Reporter for the Sustainability Desk, will be hosting for the next four weeks (weekends of July 12 through August 2nd). Adriene has spent much of her reporting time at Marketplace focusing on issues of economic sustainability. Most recently that included her work for the signature series “Consumed,” which looked at our consumer economy and what it will take to sustain it.

Barbara Bogaev will be returning to the Money chair the weekends of August 9th and August 16th. She’s well-known to the entire public radio system, serving as the longtime guest host on Fresh Air with Terry Gross and host of APM’s news and culture program Weekend America. She’s also previously filled in on Marketplace Money in the past.

Next, we’re thrilled to have Lizzie O’Leary join the roster. Lizzie is Marketplace’s most recent hire, joining Marketplace in a new role as Host/Correspondent. She has worked at CNN, Bloomberg TV and NPR and we’re really excited to have her on the team. After filling in for Kai Ryssdal for a couple of weeks, she will pick up the reins on our weekend personal finance offering. She’ll be in the host chair the weekends of August 23rd through September 13th.

Thank you for bearing with us through our extensive host search. We’ll bring you more information at the upcoming PRPD in Atlanta.

As always, we value your feedback and encourage you to share your thoughts, comments and ideas with your Station Relations Representative.
