February Highlights

Starting this February, our favorite BBC World Service documentary picks explore freedom and what it means to us today. As part of the Freedom Season, you’ll gain an understanding of what it was like to be held in Guantanamo Bay from released Afghans prisoners and tag along as a Chinese and Japanese journalist attempt to get to the bottom of the difficult history that divides their countries. In honor of Black History Month, you’ll hear moving stories about the African American experience.

Witness: Black History Month

A special hour-long edition of Witness from the BBC World Service, bringing together some incredible interviews looking at the African-American experience as told by people who were there.

Guantanamo Voices

What was it like to be held at Guantanamo Bay? The BBC’s Dawood Azami finds out from several former detainees, now in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He talks with them about how the prison changed their lives and their views of freedom, why they were eventually released, and how they see the U.S. now.

Missing Histories: China and Japan

Two journalists – one from China, the other from Japan – host each other for reporting trips. Together, they discover that despite their two countries’ numerous economic and cultural connections, history remains a barrier.
