Saturday, June 4th – Extended edition of The Conversation

This Saturday, June 4th BBC World Service will air an extended edition of The Conversation. The episode “Women and Philanthropy” will air at 2:00 PM ET replacing HardTalk and Click. It will repeat on Sunday, June 5 at 7:00am ET, and is also available for download & broadcast from June 4 – July 2.

Program Description:

In this this special extended edition we look at philanthropy through a uniquely female lens.

Do women make better philanthropists and what motivates the ultra-rich to give away vast sums of their own cash? Does their money let governments off the hook? Do they intend to leave anything to their children, or let them make their own way in the world?

The Conversation puts women at the centet of the story and this special extended edition looks at philanthropy through a uniquely female lens. Kim Chakanetsa travels to California to speak to two prolific philanthropists at the Global Philanthropy Forum conference – where wealth and civic responsibility meet, in front of a live audience.

It took guts, determination and defiance for Tsitsi Masiyiwa and her husband Strive Masiyiwa to build their telecoms empire following a lengthy legal battle with the Zimbabwean government who had a monopoly. Tsitsi is now the co-founder and co-chair of the Higherlife Foundation, which has sent thousands of southern African children to school and university. The couple are members of the Giving Pledge, an elite club of billionaires who pledge to give away at least half of their wealth.

A relentless work ethic forged in her father’s shoe shop as a young girl helped shape the path of American philanthropist Amy Rao. Amy went on to build a multi-million dollar business. Her success has meant she can write checks for the causes that move her, such as the migrant crisis in Greece. She is chair of the Human Rights Watch Voices for Justice events in San Francisco and Silicon Valley and is on the board of the Schmidt Family Foundation as well as being the president of the 11th Hour Project.
