“Yusra: Swim for Your Life”

Program Description:
The story of Yusra Mardini’s unique journey – from swimming to survive as a teenage Syrian refugee, to swimming in the Rio Olympics.

Yusra Mardini was a junior international swimmer in Syria who made a dramatic escape from her homeland when she and her sister jumped into the water to swim alongside an overcrowded boat as it threatened to sink in the sea between Turkey and Greece, pulling it to shore. Yusra’s story has captured the imagination of the world’s media, and thanks to a partnership with Czech Radio, the BBC provides unique access to her journey.

Presenter Magdalena Sodomkova travelled with Yusra, her sister and other refugees as they travelled on foot to the Hungarian border – long before there were any thoughts of the Olympics. Magdalena remained in close contact with Yusra, following her journey to Germany and the beginnings of a new life in Berlin, her selection for the Olympic Games, and her experiences in Rio as part of the newly-formed refugee team.
