Coronavirus Coverage

Marketplace

Week of July 13

Marketplace (PM)

  • Black and Latino people are more likely to get infected by COVID-19 than white people and are more likely to die once they get infected. CDC data obtained by The New York Times this month shows this is a nationwide disparity. One of the many reasons is because Black and Latino workers are much more likely to have jobs that can’t be done from home—like bus drivers or grocery clerks. Marketplace’s Jasmine Garsd spent some time in Brownsville, Brooklyn—where 80 percent of residents are Black and the infection rate is more than twice the New York City average—to hear from those essential workers.
  • We check in with Uli Nasibova, owner of Gelateria Uli in LA about how she and her business are faring.

Marketplace Tech

  • Uber is buying the food delivery app Postmates. But food delivery still isn’t profitable for the app companies, and restaurants complain about how high the fees are. Will food delivery need to get more expensive to be sustainable?

Classical

Performance Today

  • July 13-14: Valerie Kahler hosts Performance Today.
  • July 16: Performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 by pianist Kirill Gerstein and the Minnesota Orchestra, in the final concert the orchestra performed in March before public events were cancelled due to COVID-19.
