Arts and Culture

Time Machine from The Current

  • The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan album was released, which featured Blowin’ in the Wind. The British invasion was just getting underway as The Beatles began to rule the charts, it was the year of Johnny Cash’s signature tune Ring of Fire, and Buck Owens had his 1st #1 song, one the Fab 4 would record two years later. The sound of young America was everywhere with big Motown hits from Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye and 12-year-old Little Stevie Wonder, who had his first hit. Young men were rocking out in their garages with classics coming from The Trashmen & The Kingmen, and if you were around in 63 you probably sang along to the Ronettes “Be My Baby”.
  • Outside the world of music, President John F Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas, and we lost Patsy Cline in a plane crash. The Beverly Hillbillies were the top TV show, and Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton was tops at the box office.

The Splendid Table

Encore episode – August 20:

  • Celebrity photographer Melanie Dunea has stories from behind the lens about what it takes to get the right food shot.
  • Chef Dan Felder talks about the creative efforts some chefs will go to come up with a new version of an old dish.
  • Joe Gitter from America’s Test Kitchen explains the madness behind making perfectly clear ice.
