Mental Health in the Media Style Guide by Call to Mind

Call to Mind is American Public Media’s initiative to foster new conversations about mental health. As an initiative of a public media organization, Call to Mind knows intimately that language matters in media coverage as well. As such, the Call to Mind team developed a comprehensive Media Style Guide to address appropriate ways to refer to different conditions and commonly used terms related to mental wellbeing. This guide is intended as a source for journalists and media entities, but is helpful for anyone who wants to understand the implications of their language and how they could do better when it comes to talking about mental health.

Spotlight on Rethinking Mental Health Care

Rethinking Mental Health Care will present an honest critique of the nation’s mental health care shortcomings, while highlighting tangible solutions and models for improving access and quality of care. Hosted by Kimberly Adams of Marketplace, this two-part format will allow guests to deep dive into failures, challenges and opportunities, while also allowing people to question mental health experts to ground the issues in matters most pressing to the public.

Program 1: Our Mental Health Crisis, By Design
America’s mental health system is designed to deliver too little care, too late. Current policy and care systems devote the most resources to treating people in crisis, but provider and bed shortages remain common. How are people still finding ways to connect with help?

Program 2: Reinventing the Future of Mental Health Care
Preventative mental health care is effective and can prevent early symptoms from becoming chronic illnesses. What will it take to reform the nation’s care systems and policies so that people get the wholistic care they need to prevent a crisis?

In this programme Graihagh Jackson and Neal Razzell investigate the complex issue of trying to put a useful figure on the carbon footprint of what we eat and why previous schemes that have tried to do this have failed.

Over two-thirds of global emissions are linked to what we do in our homes. That includes the choices we make about the food we eat. Quorn and Oatly are two companies that have recently begun adding carbon footprint information to their products to help us make greener choices. But what does this information really tell us about the greenhouse gas emissions created in production, and how accurate is it?

Women’s History Month with APM

Witness History: Women’s History Month special

March 1 – 30
One hour

Remarkable stories of women’s history, told by the women who were there.

We meet the women who launched an anonymous poster campaign against sexism and racism in the art world in the 1980s, hear the story of a pioneering feminist in Iraq, and consider the impact of The Jane Fonda Workout.

Performance Today: Classical Woman of the Year Award

Performance Today closely tracks the diversity of the artists on our show and compares those statistics with the U.S. population. Three years ago, we realized that the statistically most underrepresented group on Performance Today was women (comparing percent of featured performances broadcast on PT with percentage of women in the U.S. population). There are also very few women in leadership roles in classical music, either in administration or performance.

We decided to create an award to honor the women making a difference in classical music to encourage and inspire other women in music to follow in their footsteps. In 2021 Performance Today will name the third Classical Woman of the Year Award winner. The winner is nominated by listeners and chosen by a committee. This year nominations will be accepted March 1 – 14 on the Performance Today website and an interview with the winner will broadcast by the end of March.

Selected Shorts: Celebrating James Baldwin

LeVar Burton, known for his work on the award-winning series Roots, Reading Rainbow, and Star Trek: The Next Generation

Guest host LeVar Burton presents a program celebrating the author he calls “potent and polemical.” Christopher Jackson reads an excerpt from Baldwin’s famous letter The Fire Next Time: in “My Dungeon Shook,” he addresses internalized racism.

Next, Anthony Rapp performs an excerpt from Giovanni’s Room, in which an expat comes to terms with his sexuality and loneliness in Paris. And Baldwin contemplates The Great Migration in his novel Go Tell It On The Mountain. We hear an excerpt performed by Charlayne Woodard.

This special features eyewitness accounts of important moments in recent African American history.

We hear from the daughter of the man named in the court case which became a turning point in the battle for civil rights, plus the sister of a teenage girl killed in a racist bomb attack. We learn how the winning performance of an all-Black basketball team helped change White American’s attitude to segregation in sport.

Later, hear about Rodney King, whose attack by police in 1991 was caught on camera and seen by millions – the later acquittal of the officers sparked days of rioting. Finally we hear from Bilal Chatman, who was sentenced to 150 years in prison under the 1994 ‘three strikes law’ which disproportionately affected Black Americans.

Presenter Max Pearson talks to Professor Gloria Browne-Marshall of John Jay College of Criminal Justice to help put it all into context.
