Marketplace

Marketplace (PM)

Crypto mining series: Each Friday in March, Marketplace will feature an episode from a short series on cryptocurrency mining. The series will focus on what crypto mining is, its environmental impacts, and how US cities are handling the influx of mining operations. Series promos will be posted to ContentDepot here.

  • March 18: China to Texas: China’s been cracking down on cryptocurrency and shutting down domestic mining operations, mostly in an effort to relieve strain on China’s rickety and overtaxed electrical grid. Marketplace’s Andy Uhler reports that many of those mining companies are moving to Oklahoma and Texas, where small towns are bending over backwards to attract them. The small town of Rockdale, Texas is welcoming two of the world’s biggest crypto mining companies — one of which is replacing operations that China shot down. As the pro-crypto website Cointelegraph reports: “Despite Rockdale being a tiny rural town of just 5,600 people, it exhibits all the benefits sought after by industrial-scale miners — crypto-friendly politicians, large plots of land hosting abandoned industrial infrastructure ripe for repurposing and dirt-cheap electricity prices thanks to Texas’ deregulated market.”

Week of March 14

  • Kai talks with Kristin Grind and Katherine Sayre, co-authors of a new book called Happy at any cost about the life and death of Zappos CEO Tony Shieh.
  • Russia’s invasion of Ukraine initiated the largest migration crisis in Europe in decades. More than 1.5 million people have fled to other European countries. Some may end up resettling in the U.S. Marketplace’s Amy Scott explains the current U.S. infrastructure for refugees – placement, what agencies they work with and the finances involved.

Marketplace Tech

  • Kimberly Adams continues to serve as the interim host of Marketplace Tech.
  • March 14: Kimberly will be speaking with Marketplace reporter Lily Jamali about her reporting for Marketplace on the crypto mining influx in Upstate New York and how locals are reacting to the new jobs and the noticeably new drain on energy resources there.
  • March 15: Kimberly will speak with Dr. Sarah Lageson, Associate Professor at Rutgers University, on Tinder’s new criminal background check function and the pros/cons of integrating such personal information on a social tech app.

On Point

This coming week, On Point will continue to cover the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • March 14: Russian President Vladimir Putin put his nuclear arsenal on high alert. What are the strategic and political moves necessary to avoid the unthinkable?
  • March 15: On Point examines the wartime leadership of Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Arts and Culture

Time Machine from The Current

March 18 – 1991

  • The Time Machine makes a stop in 1991 this time. There was something in the coffee in the Pacific Northwest. Grunge broke big with albums from Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. There were a ton of big selling albums that year, including R.E.M. and their Out of Time effort, which sold over 18 million copies. Bonnie Raitt released her biggest album that continued to rule her and released the biggest selling album of her career. It wasn’t all grunge in the early 90’s, Richard Thompson issued the most beloved song of his long career, which featured just him and his guitar. Hip-hop was hitting the mainstream with albums from Cypress Hill and A Tribe Called Quest.
  • Beyond the world of music: Queen frontman Freddie Mercury died of AIDS the same year Magic Johnson announced he had HIV. Prince Charles and Lady Dianna spit up. CD’s and cassettes were the format of choice. Maybe you made mixtapes for friends. Jordan and the Bulls were becoming a dynasty. The Minnesota Twins won their 2nd World Series. It’s all 1991, our year on this Time Machine from The Current

The Splendid Table

NEW Episode – March 18: The Refrigerator

  • Historian Jonathan Rees, author of Refrigerator Nation joins us with a historical take.
  • We dig into design questions like, what is up with that egg container?
  • Chef Shola Olunloyo of StudioKitchen in Philadelphia brings us some inspiration to turn your fridge into a hot bed of culinary triumph.
