Those groups have become a resource for some communities, as people look for information about COVID-19; though, they can also be very divisive.

September 7: On Labor Day, The Daily will air an encore broadcast of the episode A Missed Warning About the Silent Coronavirus, which looks at why an early scientific report from a German doctor – of how seemingly health people could spread the coronavirus – went unheeded.

Two concerts from What’s On

From September 5th – Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 5
BBC Broadcast times: Saturday, September 5, 2-3 p.m. ET, repeat on Sunday, September 6, 7-8 a.m. ET

Details: London Symphony Orchestra – Simon Rattle, conductor

In the first of this year’s two visits to the Proms on the BBC World Service, the London Symphony Orchestra under their Music Director Sir Simon Rattle perform the most popular among Ralph Vaughan Williams’s nine symphonies, the Fifth. The Symphony was premiered in 1943, in the middle of the Second World War, and its serene beauty was instantly appreciated as an antidote to the tragedies of war. The critic Neville Cardus called it “The most benedictory and consoling music of our time.” Andrew McGregor introduces the concert. You can learn more about this program on the Proms website.

From September 12th – Maurice Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin

In the second visit to this year’s Proms on the BBC World Service, the Philharmonia Orchestra and its Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen perform two very different 20th century works. Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin is a double homage: to the splendor of French 18th-century music and to Ravel’s friends and colleagues who perished in the First World War. Ravel was profoundly affected by his experiences as a lorry driver at the front and yet the music he wrote for the Tombeau is calm and reflective rather than tragic. The Shostakovich Concerto presents quite a contrast: written as a virtuoso vehicle for the composer himself who in his youth was also an outstanding pianist, it is an exuberant melange of jaunty tunes and distorted quotes from other composers’ works and popular songs. Global View on 2020 – 4 min. version

• German Chancellor Angela Merkel is a powerful figure both in Europe’s largest economy and in the European Union. For some 15 years, she has also been an economic bulwark for Germany, guiding the nation through a continental debt crisis, the integration of a million migrants and, more recently, trade tensions with the United States. She is due to leave office next year and there is some uncertainty about who will succeed her. Marketplace’s Stephen Beard looks at her achievements and consider the challenges facing Germany after her departure.

• While a college degree is an investment that pays off, on average, for students of color and black students in particular the risk that it won’t pay off is much higher. Kai talks with Ashley Harrington, the Federal Advocacy Director and a Senior Counsel at the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL).
• Increasingly, PTO is becoming kind of a problem. Workers are taking fewer days off (Where do you go in a pandemic? Does it look bad to a vacation when your job seems tenuous?). We’re burned out, and that’s not good for us or our employers. Meanwhile, rapidly accumulating PTO is a liability on balance sheets.  Marketplace’s Meghan McCarty Carino reports.

August 18: Performance Today will mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with music inspired by the women’s suffrage movement – including one of the right-to-vote rallying songs (recorded in 1916) and music from the Virgil Thompson’s opera about the suffragist movement called “The Mother of Us All.” The hour will also include music by Ethel Smyth (“Sm-eye-th”), a composer who was a prominent suffragette in England.

• Kai talks with Rita Colwell, former director of the National Science Foundation about her new book A Lab of One’s Own and the persistent problems that have kept many women from rising to the top of the profession.
• One of the consequences of structural racism in our economy is the persistent gap between Black and white homeownership. Just 42-percent of Black households own their homes compared to 72 of white households, and yet in majority-Black communities like Baltimore there are thousands of houses just sitting empty. Marketplace’s Amy Scott has been reporting on the ongoing vacancy crisis in Baltimore where there are more than 16,000 buildings on the city’s official vacancy list. Although that number has been approximately the same for a decade, even after millions of dollars in investment, there has been progress in some neighborhoods. For the past several months, Amy has been following the evolution of a single block in West Baltimore.

• Even at restaurants that have managed to stay open for curbside pickup and takeout, or reopen with reduced capacity, tips are way down – 75%, according to the nonprofit One Fair Wage. To make up some of that shortfall, a lot of restaurants have raised wages for their servers and other tipped workers. Marketplace’s Sam Fields looks into how that’s playing out for workers and restaurant owners.

• Black and Latino people are more likely to get infected by COVID-19 than white people and are more likely to die once they get infected. CDC data obtained by The New York Times this month shows this is a nationwide disparity. One of the many reasons is because Black and Latino workers are much more likely to have jobs that can’t be done from home—like bus drivers or grocery clerks. Marketplace’s Jasmine Garsd spent some time in Brownsville, Brooklyn—where 80 percent of residents are Black and the infection rate is more than twice the New York City average—to hear from those essential workers.
• We check in with Uli Nasibova, owner of Gelateria Uli in LA about how she and her business are faring.

• Uber is buying the food delivery app Postmates. But food delivery still isn’t profitable for the app companies, and restaurants complain about how high the fees are. Will food delivery need to get more expensive to be sustainable?
